Super Rugby - Waratahs vs Lions on 28 February 2020



Feb 28, 2020 - The match was played in Sydney on Friday 28 February 2020, and kicked off at 10:15 SA Time.

The home team scored an early try when Michael Hooper ran a great line to break through the defense on the Lions 22 and offloaded to Angus Bell who scored under the poles. Will Harrison converted to make it 7-0.

In tthe 12th minute a mini-brawl broke out, and Lions Lock Ruben Schoeman received a yellow card.

The Waratahs were quick to make use of the numerical advantage when Lachie Swinton scored in the corner. Harrison converted again to put the home side 14-0 up after just 11 minutes.

First points for the Lions came in the 14th minute from a penalty by Elton Jantjies, but the Tahs scored their 3rd try straight from the restart, when Jack Dempsey scored in the corner.

Lachie Swinton then received a yellow card for a late tackle on Elton Jantjies, who also left the field for a concussion test.

The Lions scored their firts try from a rolling maul when Marnus Schoeman went over the line, and Andries Coetzee converted, to make the score 19-10 after 24 minutes. Jantjies then returned after his concussion test, but there were no further ponts scored in the first half, so the halftime score was 19-10.

The Tahs scored their 4th try after 56 minutes in the game, when James Ramm scored after the ball went loose from a Lions attack and the Tahs gathered and launnched a counter attack which led to the try.

Marnus Schoeman then scored his second on the day for the Lions, again from a rolling maul. Jantjies converted and the score was 24-17 with 17 minutes left in the match.

The Waratash sealed the win with their 5th try when Prop Tetera Faulkner went over from a line-out, giving the hosts their 1st win of the season, the score 29-17.
