Lions 9 vs Brumbies 14

Lions beaten at the death

Brumbies score winning try towards the end of the match

The Lions defended like demons in this match, and had most of the territorial advantage, but unfortunately late in the match the Brumbies established an overlap from which they scored the winning try in the right hand corner to take the game 14-9.

Julian Huxley started the match for the Brumbies, and initially both teams were kicking for possession, with the first mistake of the game coming from Jaco van Schalkwyk, who failed to field a high ball. Luckily Januarie did well to rip the ball from one of the Brumbies in the backline move that followed from the resulting scrum, and the Lions were suddenly attacking left and right, but the Brumbies defense held.

The Lions conceded an early penalty, but Huxley kicked it just under the crossbar, but shortly thereafter, he succeeded with a more difficult one to put the Brumbies in a 3-0 lead.

7 minutes into the game, the Brumbies did not release the ball in a ruck, and Andre Pretorius kicked the penalty from just inside the Brumbies half to make it three all.

Three minutes later the Lions were a little bit under pressure inside their 22 with the Brumbies attacking, but Wallace-Harrison knocked the ball and Jaco van Schalkwyk attempted to clear. His kick didn't find touch, and Huxley managed to kick a drop without any pressure on him from about the halfway line, the Brumbies back in the lead 6-3.

19 minutes into the game the Brumbies had their hands in a ruck on their 10 meter line, and Pretorius evened the score at 6-6.

Shortly thereafter, the Brumbies were awarded a penalty for the Lions going off their feet at a ruck just about 5 meters from their line, the Brumbies decided to run the ball and fortunately for the Lions, the Brumbies then went off their feet at the next ruck, and so their chance to take the lead again was lost.

29 minutes into the game the Lions had their best chance for a try, with Ludik put into space from an overlap, and just the Fullback Huxley to beat, but Huxley did well and tackled Ludik over the touchline meters from the corner flag.

Both teams attacked at every opportunity, with both Pretorius and Huxley missing dropgoal attempts in the next 11 minutes, so the halftime score was still 6-6.

The second half started just like the 1st ended, frantic end to end stuff, and eventually the Lions went offside deep in their own 22, and offered another chance for Huxley to put the Brumbies in the lead, which he did, 9-6 for the Brumbies.

11 minutes into the 2nd half the Brumbies conceded a penalty at their scrum on their own 10 meter line, and Andre Pretorius kicked the penalty to make it 9-9 again.

Just three minutes later, Ernst Joubert was penalised for leaning over a ruck and slapping the ball out of Gregan's hands, just inside the Lions half, and this time Huxley pushed the penalty attempt to the right.

23 minutes into the 2nd half Vermaak thought he scored a try, but he was called back, the ref ruled that there was obstruction by the Lions.

Three minutes later Pretorius attempted another dropgoal, but pushed it to the right.

Ettas was replaced with 11 minutes to go in the game, and he got a standing ovation from a huge portion of the crowd on the Western stand.

33 minutes into the 2nd half the Lions attempted to run a ball from deep in their own 22, but they turned the ball over and the Brumbies had a huge overlap on the right, the ball went through the hands, and Huxley scored in the corner. He missed the conversion, but the Brumbies was in the lead again, 14-9 the score.

The Brumbies cleverly ran down the clock from here on, and managed to prevent the Lions from getting field position from which they could try and score, and that was the final score, 14-9 for the Brumbies.
