2019 Lions Super Rugby Preview
August 18, 2019 - The match was played at Ellis Park on Sunday 18 August 2019, and kicked off at 14:00pm SA Time.
Against the trend that they have set in Currie Cup matches this year, the Lions scored the 1st try in this match, when Flyhalf Shaun Reynolds took a pass close to the try-line and beat about three tackles to dot down. He converted his own try to put the Lions in a 7-0 lead after just five minutes.
Sanele Nohamba kicked a penalty for the Sharks just two minutes later to make it 7-3, and then about 10 minutes later Jeremy Ward scored a try for the Sharks after some weak tackling by the Lions. Nohamba converted to put the Sharks in a 10-7 lead.
The Lions then put themselves under enormous pressure when they lost 3 line-outs on their own throw in a row, and the Sharks scored another try by Nohamba, which he also converted, to make it 17-7 for the visitors after 22 minutes.
5 minutes later Shaun Reynolds kicked a penalty so bring the Lions a little bit closer, but close to half time Boeta Chamberlain kicked a long-range dropgoal to make it 20-10 for the sharks at the break.
Just after the break, Tyrone Green scored a spectacular try in the left corner, this after receiving a pass from Manni Rass and having to sprint and dive for the corner. Reynolds missed the conversion from the touchline, and then Nohamba and Reynolds each kicked a penalty to make it 23-18 for the Sharks after 55 minutes.
7 minutes later Reynolds scored his second try of the match, also quite similar to the 1st one, but he missed the conversion and the scores were tied at 23-all.
Ward scored his 2nd of the match about 5 minutes later, and Rhyno Smith kicked the conversion, to put the Sharks 7 points up at 30-23 with about 10 minutes left in the match.
With 5 minutes to go Marnus Schoeman scored the 4th try for the Lions, again in the left corner, and Dillon Smit missed the conversion, to make the score 30-28 for the Sharks, which was also the final score.
