2019 Lions Super Rugby Preview
March 23, 2019 - The match was played in Singapore on Saturday 23 March 2019, and kicked off at 12:55pm SA Time.
Sanzaar announced on the Friday before the match that the Sunwolves will be axed from Super Rugby the year after next year, so there was an expectation that they might use this match to prove the decision wrong, but the Lions were just to good to allow the Sunwolves to make a statement in the game.
The Sunwolves did take the early lead in the game when they were awarded a penalty try, this came from a move where Sylvian Mahuza deliberately knocked down a pass that probably would have lead to a Sunwolves try in the left corner. Mahuza also received a yellow card and the Sunwolves were leading 7-0 after 5 minutes.
Lions captain, Malcolm Marx, then scored two tries, one converted by Elton Jantjies, to put the Lions in a 12-7 lead at half time.
Early in the second half the Sunwolves reduced their deficit to only two points when Hayden Parker kicked a penalty, to make it 12-10, and then Nic Groom scored a try about 10 minutes later to make it 17-10. This was followed by a try by Elton Jantjies and a converted try by Lionel Mapoe to give the Lions a healthy 29-10 lead with 20 minutes to play.
Rahboni Vosayaco then scored the Sunwolves 2nd try, converted by Parker to make it 29-17, and the Lions answered with a Jantjies penalty and a try by Hacjivah Dayimani to make it 37-17.
Just before the final hooter, Vosayaco scored his second try, also converted by Parker, to make the final score 37-24 for the Lions, who also earned a bonus point for the 6 tries to 3.
