2019 Lions Super Rugby Preview
March 9, 2019 - The match was played at Ellis Park on Saturday 9 March 2019, and kicked off at 15:05pm SA Time.
The Lions made no fewer than 10 changes for this match, while the Jaguares made 11 changes. Straight from the kickoff, the Lions were under huge pressure when a loose pass from Simelane didn't find the intended receiver and the Jaguares had an attacking scrum just 5 metres from the Lions try-line. The Lions responded with a huge scrum to earn a penalty and were able to relieve the pressure, and the Jaguares also conceded two further penalties at the line-outs to give the Lions early momentum in the game, as well as an easy exit from the early pressure.
The Lions then used a 14 man line-out at the next three line-outs, but every time the Jaguares were able to stop the maul by pushing it into touch. Eventually Rhyno Herbst was able to score the first try for the Lions, converted by Jantjies, to make it 7-0 after 14 minutes.
The Jaguares kicked a penalty in the 18th minute to pull closer at 7-3, before Jantjies scored a try and converted it to make it 14-3 for the Lions after 24 minutes.
Just 3 minutes later Kwagga Smith scored a great try for the Lions when he found himself in space on the right and was able to use his speed to run in the try down the right hand touch line.
The Jaguares hit back with an unconverted try in the left corner, and then Simelane scored his first Super Rugby try for the Lions when he pounced on a loose ball close to the half way line and used his speed and feet to run in the try under the poles, converted by Jantjies to put the Lions in a 26-8 lead after 36 minutes.
The Jaguares had the final say in the 1st half when they scored a try from a maul just before the break, to make the halftime score 26-13 for the Lions.
After the break the Lions scored 3 quick tries in just 10 minutes to go up 47-13, and then a number of replacements came on for the Lions and the Jaguares were then able to score a further 4 tries to make the final score 47-39 for the Lions.
